Heatwave Alert: 16 Southern French Departments on Orange Alert Amid Rising Temperatures

Météo-France has issued an orange heatwave alert for 16 departments in southern France, effective from July 5, signaling the third heatwave episode of the month. Departments affected include Pyrénées-Orientales, Aude, Hérault, Gard, Ardèche, Vaucluse, and Drôme, with temperatures expected to soar between 36°C and 40°C, particularly in Languedoc-Roussillon and the southwest.

In the Ardèche, temperatures will range from 32°C to 37°C, with nocturnal lows staying elevated between 21°C and 23°C. The Gard department anticipates highs of 38°C to 39°C, while safety measures have been implemented, including bans on live animal transport during peak heat hours and adapted work conditions for outdoor laborers.

Authorities emphasize the heat's impact on all demographics but highlight vulnerable groups: infants, the elderly, outdoor workers, and those with chronic conditions. Precautionary recommendations urge residents to stay hydrated, avoid sun exposure, and monitor for symptoms like dizziness and fatigue.

The heatwave is described as less intense but more prolonged than prior episodes this month and is expected to persist and spread eastward. Météo-France forecasts that the orange alert might extend to further departments, as temperatures rise steadily.

Local officials have activated communal safety plans, assembled heatwave committees, and disseminated guidelines to safeguard public health amid the sustained high temperatures and increased risks of dehydration, wildfire, and drowning.
