Historic Drought and Third Heatwave Grip France and Europe with Extreme Conditions

France and much of Europe are currently enduring a severe and historic drought compounded by a third consecutive heatwave, intensifying environmental stresses and public health risks. As of August 11, 2026, vast regions including France, the UK, Germany, Austria, and Hungary are facing unprecedented low soil moisture levels, far below those recorded during the notable 2022 drought. The Copernicus Institute's latest bulletin highlights the extent of dry conditions across Central and Western Europe.

In Hungary, the Danube River’s water levels have plummeted so drastically that large sandbanks have been exposed, while in southern France, the soil has cracked extensively, endangering agricultural zones such as vineyards and cornfields. Similarly, London’s Hyde Park has seen its grass turn yellow under the persistent heat. Moreover, critical waterways like the Rhine River risk disintegration as water levels dwindle.

Complementing the drought, France is bracing for intensified heatwaves. Météo France has extended orange heatwave warnings to 78 departments as temperatures are anticipated to soar between 36°C and 40°C, signaling a heightened risk of heat stress. This marks the nation’s third heatwave since July 28, enveloping the entire country with particularly extreme conditions forecasted from August 12 through 14.

Defined by strict meteorological criteria, these waves of heat pose significant challenges not only to agriculture and natural ecosystems but also to public health, increasing the urgency for precautionary measures.

With drought conditions showing no signs of abating and temperatures climbing further, France and Europe confront an escalating environmental crisis that threatens water supplies, ecosystems, and vulnerable populations alike.
