Facing a persistent air pollution episode, Île-de-France authorities have activated emergency measures effective from 5:30 AM to 11:59 PM on May 27, 2026, aiming to curb nitrogen oxides and fine particle emissions during this environmental crisis.

Under decree number 2026-00648, these measures apply across the region and include significant restrictions on road traffic, industrial activities, residential practices, and transportation sectors. Traffic-related emissions are targeted through exceptional speed limits: a maximum of 110 km/h on highways ordinarily limited to 130 km/h; 90 km/h on roads normally capped at 110 km/h; and 70 km/h on routes limited to 90 km/h or 80 km/h. These steps are crucial as emissions typically spike during heatwaves combined with calm weather.

Industrial operators with classified environmental responsibilities must comply with specific emission reduction prescriptions, while all polluting industries are urged to reduce their activity and atmospheric discharges. Residential activities like garden maintenance involving gas-powered tools are postponed. Additionally, the temporary ban on solvent-based products—including white spirit, paints, varnishes, and automotive touch-up products—aims to reduce ozone formation that exacerbates air quality issues.

The transport sector will intensify anti-pollution checks focusing on vehicle emissions and compliance with environmental standards. Authorities advise residents, particularly vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with respiratory conditions, to limit vigorous outdoor activities, prioritize public transport, and reduce car use throughout the pollution event.

Air quality will be continuously monitored, with the possibility of extending mitigation measures if weather conditions do not improve. These coordinated efforts follow the inter-prefectural order of December 19, 2016, which outlines protocols for public information and alert during pollution events in Île-de-France.
