Iran Closes French Cultural Center in Tehran, Sparking Diplomatic Tensions

Iranian authorities have shut down a French language center affiliated with the French embassy in Tehran, citing a judicial decision according to the Tehran prosecutor's office. This closure has been sharply condemned by the French government, which described the move as unjustified and a violation of diplomatic norms. The French Foreign Ministry criticized the intrusion of Iranian security forces into the center's premises as a “new attack” on France's cultural presence in Iran, following an earlier incident in July when two embassy agents were assaulted.

In response to the closure, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot has announced plans to summon the Iranian ambassador to Paris to protest the action. The French side has indicated that appropriate measures will be taken given the serious diplomatic breach.

From Tehran’s perspective, the Iranian government defends its decision by accusing the center of engaging in activities that undermine Iranian culture and national security. These allegations include identifying individuals and assisting the emigration of skilled Iranians, despite the center's stated role in language education. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi publicly criticized Foreign Minister Barrot on social media, accusing France of hypocrisy over its colonial history.

The diplomatic rift comes amid already strained Franco-Iranian relations. The two foreign ministers are scheduled to meet at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in New York, presenting a potential opportunity to address the escalating tensions.

This development highlights an intensifying diplomatic confrontation, with France reinforcing its commitment to protect its cultural institutions abroad while Iran asserts its sovereign right to act against what it perceives as foreign interference.
