La Poste to Close 25 Offices in Alsace by 2031 Amidst Declining Profitability

La Poste has revealed plans to shut down 25 offices across the Alsace region by 2031 due to declining profitability and reduced customer visits, a trend worsened by increased digital services. These closures will impact towns including Strasbourg, Mulhouse, and Reichshoffen. This decision forms part of a nationwide reduction of 441 post offices and a shift of postal services to local businesses.

Patrick Leroy, the secretary general of the CGT PTT union in Bas-Rhin, criticized the move, calling it an abandonment of territories — especially affecting vulnerable groups such as elderly residents and people with disabilities who may struggle with digital access or transportation challenges. Leroy highlighted that this pattern is not new; since 1995, France has lost 50% of its postal offices due to previous territorial reorganization laws.

In response, the union has called for a strike on September 29 to defend public postal services and protest against rising fuel prices, which could further strain service accessibility. The closures signal ongoing challenges in maintaining public services in rural and vulnerable communities amid economic pressures and digital transitions.
