Mass Evacuations and Shelter Struggles Intensify as Gironde Wildfires Advance

A rapidly spreading wildfire near Bordeaux, in the Gironde region of southwestern France, has forced precautionary evacuations of numerous communes and displaced approximately 150,000 people since Wednesday evening. Authorities ordered preventive evacuations for seven communes near Bordeaux, including Saint-Médard-en-Jalles, Le Haillan, Saint-Jean-d’Illac, Martignas-sur-Jalle, and Saint-Aubin-de-Médoc, as the fires advanced dangerously close to populated areas.

The wildfire's severity has led to large-scale displacement, with tens of thousands fleeing their homes in both Gironde and the neighboring Landes department. Further evacuation orders have been issued for new communes as the fires continue their swift progression towards Bordeaux, underscoring the critical and evolving threat posed.

Evacuees have faced chaotic and painful ordeals, notably highlighted by thousands from Andernos-les-Bains who fled on July 24 and were trapped for hours in long traffic jams during their escape amid worsening conditions at night. Many evacuees are now experiencing difficulties finding shelter; reports indicate some are forced to sleep in their cars due to a shortage of beds in emergency centers. One hotel in Mérignac was evacuated as flames approached the metropolitan area, exacerbating the displacement challenges.

In Bordeaux, a crowded hall has been set up as an emergency shelter, currently housing thousands of evacuees. Despite the pressure, the atmosphere there remains relatively calm according to on-site reports.

Firefighters continue battling the blaze and are awaiting reinforcements to contain the fire. The situation remains critical as the wildfires threaten to extend further into inhabited zones.
