Massive Efforts Underway as Southern France Battles Multiple Wildfires

Southern France is grappling with several intense wildfires, prompting a large-scale government and emergency response. In the Gard region, three major fires are actively burning in Roquemaure, Milhaud, and Saint-Victor-de-Malcap. The prefect of Gard has activated the departmental operational center to coordinate efforts amid these crises.

The Roquemaure fire, which ignited around 2:45 PM, has consumed about 25 hectares of vegetation near the A9 highway. Firefighters, including 150 personnel, are fighting the blaze with the support of aerial units conducting approximately 40 water drops. Nearby, eleven residences were evacuated as a precaution. The Milhaud fire, which reignited at a wood pallet company, has expanded to 130 hectares of surrounding vegetation. It involves 100 firefighters with reinforcements incoming. Additionally, a fire in Saint-Victor-de-Malcap, which has burned 6 hectares of grassland, is reportedly under control, with 70 firefighters continuing containment operations.

Despite the severity of the situation, no fatalities have been reported, though 10 firefighters were slightly injured in Milhaud. Transport disruptions are significant: the A9 highway is closed in both directions between Orange and Remoulins, and regional train services are suspended. The SNCF has arranged bus substitutions for affected travelers. Authorities have urged residents to avoid fire zones, steer clear of smoke, and only evacuate when directed.

Beyond Gard, governmental engagement is robust. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu visited Marseille to oversee a crisis management cell addressing the broader wildfire emergency. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez is scheduled to visit Aude, where a wildfire has been burning for two days, indicating sustained government attention to the fires spreading across Southern France.
