Massive Forest Fires Rage Across Southern France Amid Heatwave

Southern France is currently battling multiple severe forest fires exacerbated by an intense heatwave, with several departments placed under a heightened danger alert by Météo-France. Since Wednesday, fires have broken out in the Pyrénées-Orientales, Aude, Hérault, Gard, Vaucluse, and Bouches-du-Rhône departments, with the largest blaze occurring between Aude and Hérault. This particular fire has consumed approximately 900 hectares and is being fueled by strong winds, prompting authorities to issue evacuation orders for residents to ensure their safety.

In the Gard department, firefighting efforts remain robust, with 140 firefighters actively tackling several ongoing vegetation fires. The Milhaud fire, which began on June 30, has impacted 160 hectares, with 80 hectares currently burning as crews work to contain hotspots. At Benne 30, an industrial fire persists but remains controlled, demanding ongoing operational firefighting with 50 personnel engaged. Additional fires have been stabilized or extinguished, such as the Roquemaure fire (57 hectares and now stabilized), the Saint-Victor-de-Malcap fire (23 hectares and extinguished), and a smaller fire near Nîmes (4 hectares and under containment).

Authorities emphasize the importance of public vigilance and adherence to fire prevention measures, advising residents that evacuations should only follow official orders. They also recommend that residents stay calm and keep windows closed during nearby fires.

The compounded effect of the severe heatwave, strong winds, and dry conditions is causing unprecedented fire dangers across these southern regions, leading to an aggressive deployment of ground and aerial firefighting resources from local departments and national support.
