Nepotism and Corruption Allegations Rock French Parliament and Élysée Palace

Charles Alloncle, a deputy from the Union of the Right for the Republic (UDR), is facing scrutiny over his employment of a parliamentary assistant amid allegations that may breach anti-nepotism laws. This follows reports and photographs published by Libération and Paris Match, which suggest a personal relationship between Alloncle and his assistant. The president of the National Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet, has asked the Assembly’s ethics officer to investigate whether this relationship violates laws enacted in 2017. These laws prohibit parliamentarians from employing family members or partners funded by public resources, a reform introduced after the misconduct involving François and Pénélope Fillon. Alloncle contends that his relationship with the assistant does not meet legal definitions of marriage, civil partnership, or concubinage and asserts his personal life should remain private.

Simultaneously, the French National Financial Prosecutor’s Office conducted searches at the Élysée Palace related to an ongoing corruption probe centering on the process of panthéonisations—the ceremonial entry of notable figures into the Panthéon, a national mausoleum. These searches represent the first such operations at the presidential palace since 2018. The Élysée faces accusations including favoritism, illegal interest-taking, corruption, and influence peddling. These allegations cast serious doubts on the integrity and fairness of the panthéonisation procedures.
