French rapper and filmmaker Orelsan has officially announced his upcoming fantasy film, 'Yoroï', which is scheduled to premiere on October 29, 2025. The film, co-written and produced by Orelsan along with David Tomaszewski, showcases a blend of fantasy elements shot in Japan. In this cinematic endeavor, Orelsan takes on the lead role, playing Aurélien, a musician who moves to Japan with his pregnant wife, Nanako, after a taxing tour.
The narrative follows Aurélien as he discovers ancient armor in a well, subsequently awakening mystical beings known as yōkaï. The film integrates absurd humor akin to the style of Quentin Dupieux, with hints of playful elements reminiscent of 1980s-1990s Japanese sentai series, comparable to 'Power Rangers'. Orelsan, who has a well-documented appreciation for manga, has previously voiced the character Saitama in the French version of the anime 'One Punch Man' since 2016, adding credence to his fascination with Japanese culture.
In addition to the film, Orelsan plans to release an album that will serve as the official soundtrack for 'Yoroï', expanding the scope of this project beyond just visual storytelling. The film's teaser has been praised for capturing Orelsan's signature style and nonchalance, drawing comparisons to his earlier projects, including the series 'Bloqué' and his directed film 'Comment c'est loin'.
