Pope Leo XIV to Meet Sexual Violence Victims in Lourdes Amid High Expectations and Criticism

Pope Leo XIV's forthcoming meeting with seven victims of sexual violence in Lourdes during his 2026 visit to France has drawn significant attention and anticipation. Victims selected by the French episcopate represent diverse experiences related to abuse scandals involving priests such as the abbé Pierre and Bernard Preynat. Among them, five have revealed their identities but intend to withhold their messages until the meeting. Jean-Marie Delbos, associated with the Notre-Dame de Bétharram scandal, plans to push for the dissolution of the managing congregation.

Victims emphasized their autonomy in discussions and clarified that being heard does not mean compromising on demands, which include institutional recognition, sanctions, and reparations. The meeting takes place near the Sanctuary's basilica, amid the removal of mosaics by artist Marko Rupnik, himself accused of sexual misconduct.
