Prolonged 2026 Heatwaves Devastate French Farmers and Livestock, Prompting Aid Appeals

France is enduring an exceptionally intense and prolonged summer heatwave, which has now lasted for nearly 70 days with the national thermal indicator remaining above normal since June 11, 2026. According to Météo-France, the current third wave of heat, ongoing since July 28, may last until August 18 or 19, potentially becoming the longest heatwave since 1947 and equaling the 1983 record. These three heatwaves combined far exceed the usual summer norms, causing widespread challenges across sectors, notably agriculture.

Farmers and livestock owners are facing severe difficulties as the intense heat has scorched pastures, threatening the nutrition and survival of animals. Catherine Bout, a goat farmer in Gironde, launched a donation appeal on August 10 after the heat severely burned the grazing land for her goats. Her campaign has raised over 4,600 euros, enabling her to secure sufficient hay to feed her goats through the end of the year. However, Bout's appeal underscores a broader crisis affecting many farmers battling the consequences of climate change, as the donations collected to date represent only a fraction of what the profession requires to cope with the ongoing environmental stress.

Despite some forecasted relief, Météo-France cautions that high temperatures may return, compounding the strain on agricultural communities already grappling with this "never-ending summer." The extraordinary duration and intensity of this year's heatwaves far surpass previous records, highlighting the increasing vulnerability of French farmers to climatic extremes.
