Raphaël Glucksmann has decisively won the 2026 social-democratic primary in France, securing 66.13% of the votes and eliminating the need for a second round. The election, which included five candidates, saw strong voter turnout with over 120,000 participants among the 140,000 registered voters. Olivier Faure, the first secretary of the Socialist Party, finished second with approximately 14–14.48% of the vote, while other candidates Ségolène Royal, Emmanuel Maurel, and Jérôme Guedj each garnered less than 8%.
The voting process experienced a disruption due to a cyberattack on the electronic voting platform, forcing organizers to extend the voting deadline until 6 PM on Sunday to ensure full participation. Despite this setback, the primary successfully concluded, confirming Glucksmann, a eurodeputy affiliated with Place publique, as the clear winner and front-runner for the 2027 presidential election.
In his acceptance speech, Glucksmann positioned himself as the candidate of the democratic left, committed to social and fiscal justice, and pledged to confront the rising threat from the extreme right, notably Marine Le Pen. He emphasized the importance of the election for the future of the Fifth Republic and called for unity among the left to strengthen their position.
Reactions from rival candidates varied; Ségolène Royal expressed disappointment but stressed the need for party cohesion, while Jérôme Guedj acknowledged Glucksmann’s convincing victory. Patrick Mennucci, who organized the primary, confirmed the legitimacy of the result and the cancellation of any second-round runoff.
This primary result marks a significant milestone for the left-wing coalition and sets the stage for the upcoming 2027 presidential race with Raphaël Glucksmann as the leading social-democratic candidate.
