Remarkably Early Heat Wave Hits Western France with Record Temperatures and Heat Alerts

An unusually early and intense heat wave is gripping western France as of late May 2026, setting new records and prompting official heat warnings. Starting over the weekend, Météo-France has declared a yellow heatwave alert for the Finistère region, marking the first time such an alert has been issued in May since the system’s inception in 2004. The heatwave, driven by a high-pressure anticyclone trapping warm air from the Sahara and Morocco, is causing maximum temperatures to soar well beyond seasonal norms, with peaks locally reaching up to 35°C.

On Saturday, Paris recorded its first 30°C day of the year, reaching 31°C and signaling the start of what Météo-France predicts to be a prolonged heat event. This sustained warmth is exceptional for May, with forecasts warning that temperatures could approach 35°C by mid-week, potentially breaking the historical record for the month set in 1944. The capital, already placed under heat alert, faces a risk of escalation to an orange alert, especially on Monday and Tuesday, the expected peak days of the heatwave.

In Finistère, maximum temperatures on Sunday are forecasted between 31°C and 33°C inland and around 26°C along the coast, with warm nights where temperatures will remain between 18 and 21°C, reducing the cooling effect. Other western cities such as Nantes, Bordeaux, Rennes, and Capbreton are also experiencing significant departures from normal temperatures, with reports of 35.2°C in Capbreton and 33°C in Rennes. The heat alert encompasses the entire western France region, with the situation expected to continue for several days before temperatures gradually moderate towards the end of the week.

Authorities have advised residents, particularly vulnerable populations, to take protective measures such as staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous activity during peak heat hours, and seeking cooler environments. The prefect of Finistère has emphasized simple heat safety tips including closing shutters during the day and ventilating homes in the evening.

This early heatwave stands out as one of the most remarkable precocious heat events recorded in France, due to both its timing and intensity. While a slight cooling trend is anticipated in the northern regions by Wednesday, the southwest may endure the heat longer.
