The Somme department in France has announced a new initiative aimed at promoting social integration and safety for children with disabilities by offering free swimming lessons this summer. The program, titled '1,2,3 Nagez!', is open to children aged 4 to 18 and will run from July 7 to August 1, 2025, at nine partner swimming pools across the region.
This initiative, fully funded by the Somme department, collaborates with local swimming clubs and aquatic facility managers to create a supportive environment tailored to children with various disabilities, including motor, sensory, cognitive, and psychological challenges. As stated by Christelle Hiver, President of the Conseil départemental, "With this program, we lift barriers to participation and affirm our commitment to inclusion."
Professional instructors, trained specifically to work with children with disabilities, will lead the swimming sessions, aiming not only to teach swimming skills but also to enhance the children's confidence and autonomy. Families can register their children online for one to four weeks of lessons, depending on availability at the swimming pools.
