Tadej Pogacar Makes History with Fifth Tour de France Victory Amid Challenging Conditions

Tadej Pogacar has cemented his legacy in cycling history by winning his fifth Tour de France, a feat that ties him with legendary riders Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, and Miguel Indurain. The 113th edition of the Tour concluded on July 26, 2026, with a final stage shortened to 89 kilometers entirely within Paris due to security concerns linked to forest fires in Gironde. Pogacar's dominant performance throughout the three-week race saw him finish with a total time of 73 hours, 56 minutes, and 26 seconds.

Finishing second was Remco Evenepoel of Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe, trailing by 6 minutes and 26 seconds, while Pogacar's teammate Isaac Del Toro rounded out the podium in third place. Del Toro, at just 19 years old, also received the best young rider award. The Tour highlighted substantial French talent, with Paul Seixas narrowly missing the podium and three French cyclists finishing in the top ten, including Lenny Martinez in fifth and Jordan Jegat in tenth.

The Tour faced exceptional weather conditions, including a heatwave that led to shortened stages, with the 9th stage and the final one being reduced from their original lengths. Despite these challenges, the event attracted record crowds, notably 600,000 spectators at Alpe d'Huez, and featured the fastest stage ever recorded with Norwegian Soren Wærenskjold averaging 50.91 km/h.

Beyond the overall victory, Mads Pedersen of Lidl-Trek secured the green jersey for points classification, with strong team support from Quinn Simmons, who was named the super équipier of the Tour. Richard Carapaz of EF Education EasyPost claimed the mountains classification with 156 points and was honored as the super combatif of the Tour for the second time. Lidl-Trek also won the team classification, finishing ahead of UAE Team Emirates-XRG by nearly 37 minutes.

Christian Prudhomme, Tour director, emphasized the significance of the event for France, praising the spectators' enthusiasm and the resilience of organizers and riders amid difficult conditions. Mathieu van der Poel won the prestigious final sprint on the Champs-Élysées, closing an iconic chapter in this historic edition.
