Tensions Flare and Personal Attacks Mar 2026 Departmental Council Session

The first departmental council meeting of 2026, following the recent municipal elections, saw heightened political tensions and confrontations that completely disrupted the session. Unlike its usual calm nature, the meeting was dominated by tense debates rooted in the municipal campaign’s fallout, lasting over four hours.

Opposition councillor Magali Duvernois abruptly left during the session as exchanges turned personal and acrimonious. The council president, Christine Bouquin, defended Ludovic Fagaut, the newly elected mayor of Besançon and first vice-president of the department, against opposition criticisms about his multiple political roles. Bouquin stated her confidence in Fagaut’s ability to serve effectively, noting his resignation from his professional career to focus on his duties. Fagaut himself denounced the personal nature of the attacks and the adverse impact on his family.

Tensions further escalated when majority councillor Priscilla Borgerhoff accused Duvernois of affiliations with the extreme right amidst discussions on political alliances formed during the elections. The sharp dispute led to a suspension of the meeting and a demand from the majority for public apologies, which the opposition refused. Following this, Duvernois exited the assembly.

As a result of the discord, none of the nine reports on the agenda were addressed, illustrating how political rivalries and personal grievances overshadowed substantive council business during the session.
