Unemployment Rate in France Climbs to 8.3% in Second Quarter 2026, Highest Since Autumn 2020

France's unemployment rate rose to 8.3% in the second quarter of 2026, marking the highest level since the autumn of 2020, according to data published by Insee on August 7. This represents an increase of 0.2 percentage points from the previous quarter and translates into 2.7 million people actively seeking work across the country. Although concerning, this figure remains below the mid-2015 peak of 10.6%, a period marked by even higher unemployment rates.

The rise in unemployment affects all age groups. The youth unemployment rate among those aged 15 to 24 increased by 0.4 points to reach 21.6%, while the rate for individuals aged 25 to 49 grew by 0.2 points to 7.5%. Seniors aged 50 and above also experienced a 0.3 point rise, bringing their unemployment rate to 5.5%. Additionally, more than 1.9 million people who want to work are currently not classified as unemployed because they are either not actively searching for a job or are not immediately available, forming the so-called “halo around unemployment.”

The crisis linked to the COVID-19 pandemic is largely responsible for this increase, as discussed by various sources including Le Monde, which highlights its lasting impact on France’s job market. The number of job seekers without any activity, listed under category A and registered at France Travail, also grew by 0.8% to reach 3,323,000 individuals, according to the Dares statistics.

This recent uptick in unemployment underscores ongoing economic challenges faced by France amid lingering effects of the pandemic. While the situation has worsened compared to recent quarters, the overall unemployment rate remains below the significant peaks seen in previous years, suggesting some resilience in the labor market.
