Var Prefecture Imposes Strict Fire Prevention Measures Amid Severe Wildfire Threats

On July 23, 2026, the Var prefecture implemented a comprehensive ban on all gatherings and use of open flames in and near forested areas due to severe wildfire risks. Temporary commercial activities like guided tours and mobile food services are also banned throughout the Var department. Furthermore, the use of barbecues, stoves, braziers, or any cooking devices producing flames or embers is strictly forbidden to curb fire risks.

Given the forecasted strong winds exacerbating fire dangers, local officials, including mayors, have been urged to postpone planned festivities to ensure firefighters and law enforcement can focus on emergency responses. Authorities highlight that nine out of ten forest fires in the region originate from human activity, with approximately half linked to negligence, underscoring the critical importance of compliance with these preventive measures.
