French Flag Football Teams Face Crucial Challenges at 2026 World Championships Ahead of Olympic Qualifiers

The 2026 Flag Football World Championships are currently underway in Düsseldorf, Germany, serving as a pivotal qualifying event for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. France’s men’s and women’s flag football teams are participating, with high stakes including medal chances and Olympic qualification.

To secure a spot in the Olympics, the French teams must finish in the top three at this tournament, which features 16 nations competing in 96 matches over four days. The French men, ranked fifth globally and 2006 world champions, are in a tough group alongside Italy (the reigning European champions), Great Britain, Panama, and Austria. Unfortunately, France opened their campaign with a 33-26 loss to Panama, heightening the pressure to perform well in upcoming matches, especially against Italy.

The squad of twelve players is led by head coach Mathias Torre and includes standout athlete Anthony Mahoungou. Simultaneously, the women’s team, which improved significantly by finishing fourth at Euro 2025, also had a challenging start with a 33-14 defeat by the UK, current European champions. Captained by Elisa De Santis, the team aims to quickly bounce back with upcoming matches against Austria and China.
