Major Forest Fire in Luglon, Landes, Continues to Rage Amid Unfavorable Conditions

A significant forest fire near Luglon in the Landes department has consumed approximately 400 hectares of woodland, prompting large-scale firefighting and evacuation efforts. The fire, located 1 to 2 kilometers west of Luglon's town center, reignited on August 13, 2026, after initially starting in June, with authorities describing the situation as 'unfavorable' by late afternoon due to flare-ups and extreme heat conditions.

The response to the fire involves a substantial deployment of resources including 280 firefighters, 40 specialized forest fire units, and eight aerial firefighting aircraft such as two Dash planes, four Canadairs, and two Air Tractors. Additionally, 45 members of the local gendarmerie are assisting with evacuations and maintaining safety in the area. Approximately 400 residents have been evacuated as a precautionary measure, with the town hall of Sabres serving as a gathering place for those displaced.

Key roads near Luglon, RD 327 and 14, have been closed to traffic to facilitate firefighting operations and protect public safety. Gilles Clavreul, the prefect of Landes, has activated the departmental operational center (COD) to coordinate the ongoing emergency efforts. Authorities are urging residents to avoid the area to prevent interference with firefighting activities and ensure their safety.

The fire's reactivation amid a prolonged heatwave complicates containment efforts, as spikes in temperature contribute to unpredictable fire behavior. The local government remains focused on mitigating the impact of the blaze and safeguarding surrounding communities.
