Spectator Interference Causes Rider Abandonments in 2026 Tour de France's 19th Stage

During the 19th stage of the 2026 Tour de France, Colombian cyclist Einer Rubio of the Movistar team was forced to abandon the race after a serious collision involving a spectator lying on the road. The incident occurred when a UAE Emirates XRG team car sharply braked to avoid the spectator, causing Rubio to crash violently into the car's rear window. He sustained significant injuries, including a bloodied nose, and is expected to be sidelined for several weeks.

This stage, marked by the challenging climb up Alpe d'Huez with its 21 hairpin turns, was further marred by reckless behavior from intoxicated spectators despite safety barriers. Italian rider Eduardo Affini also abandoned the Tour due to a separate spectator-related incident.

The 2026 Tour started with 184 riders across 23 teams, including notable competitors such as Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard, both of whom had already abandoned in earlier stages. The continuous rider withdrawals underscore the race's challenges, intensified by off-course hazards like spectator interference.
