Verdun Workshop Highlights Circular Economy for Sustainable Product Lifecycles

On July 21, a workshop held at the Marcel-Giroux Center in Verdun focused on promoting the circular economy as a sustainable alternative to the prevailing linear economic model. Facilitated by Paul, the session brought together four participants who explored the environmental impacts of the current economic system and practical solutions to extend product lifecycles.

Paul explained that the circular economy aims to reduce natural resource exploitation, prolong product usage, and encourage recycling rather than continuous extraction. Using cards illustrating climate change, greenhouse gases, and consumption patterns, attendees mapped out the rapid depletion and waste generated by the linear economy, dubbed “dérèglement mondialisé.” They highlighted that resource extraction has more than tripled since 1970, with a third of global food production wasted and 10,000 liters of water needed to produce one kilogram of cotton.

Participants proposed solutions like collaborative consumption, repair services, buying second-hand products, and supporting local consumption to shift societal practices towards sustainability. Anne-Marie Gauthier and Caroline Giard emphasized the need for widely accessible initiatives that empower consumers. Paul, who has been leading these workshops for three years, noted that although changing climate behaviors remains challenging, embracing the circular economy offers tangible daily choices for a more sustainable future.

This local initiative underscores growing efforts in France to rethink consumption and resource use by extending product lifecycles and fostering circular economic models.
