Sébastien Lecornu Navigates Coalition Formation Amidst Political Tensions

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu is in the final stages of forming his new government coalition ahead of a parliamentary declaration scheduled for next week. With the political landscape marked by uncertainty, Lecornu has reached out to key parties, including the Republicans (LR) and MoDem, to forge a united front. The Republicans are meeting on Sunday to decide whether to join the government, amid dissatisfaction expressed by their leader Bruno Retailleau over unaddressed demands, notably on immigration policies. François-Xavier Bellamy of LR stressed the importance of their involvement to prevent the left from becoming the dominant parliamentary force.

On the other hand, Marc Fesneau, leader of MoDem, has softened his earlier critical stance toward Lecornu following his request for clearer details about the government’s methods and roadmap. Fesneau emphasized the need for clarity on fiscal priorities, particularly concerning the 2026 budget, taxation, and public spending before MoDem fully commits its support. Concerns also remain within MoDem about their reduced government representation compared to prior terms, with only the Foreign Affairs post secured so far.

Lecornu's roadmap focuses on unity within the center-right coalition and outlines plans to reduce public expenditure, combat tax fraud with new legislation, and reinforce public safety and immigration controls. However, the Prime Minister faces mounting pressure from left-wing parties, including the Socialist Party, which has threatened a motion of censure if their demands are not met. The Greens and other leftist factions have signaled similar potential challenges.

As Lecornu prepares to present the new government lineup and deliver his general policy statement in the National Assembly, the political stakes are high. Securing alliance cohesion and parliamentary support will be critical in implementing his budget priorities and ensuring political stability.
